July Spritzer
July is wind down time. It’s either too hot or it loosens the ties that keep you indoors. With indoors as a metaphor, wherever you are summer is a time for inner growth. Sunshine works magic. The magic of light. Long walks on your own or with a friend in a cool forest or on the beach. More light to read, at least the daily paper which I find is an endless treasure trove of ideas for films. About a month ago I came across a fascinating article, in the Business Section no less, of the NYTimes. On its own, a plum of a story about life’s contradictions which in turn had parallels to the perilous direction the world is going in today. It would make a most interesting film. It was all there. Proving too, that you never know where you are going to find stories to write about. Here’s the link if you want to a further look.

Yes, so dig deeper, think harder, and look further. Not only at the large picture but look for the nuances of story in each line. I think it was Amy Sherman-Palladino, who wrote the incredibly successful TV series, “The Marvelous Mrs Maisel” (which I haven’t seen) when accepting the Emmy Award she said, “Words matter.”
OK I promised so here’s a spritz of three films, each one hugely different from the other and from very different parts of the world. All three are small films in that they diid not receive much attention but all of them are good. You can often learn more from lesser known films than from films considered to be the best. So, Say My Name is sexy, funny, smart. Written by a woman it has a clever twist on role reversals. Look for the threads in the plot, it could have ended up being plot heavy, but each turn does land, that’s not always the case so worth your attention. Then there’s Hotel Salvation, a wise, delightful and deeply insightful film, though made by a very young, only 25, filmmaker. Before making this film he’d won the Venice Biennale College Award and he clearly has a future. The last film The Hate U Give, did get some attention, it is about a sixteen year old trapped in and by the two worlds of a racially divided America.
Dig deeper, think harder, look further…
So now why not take out something you wrote, a while ago, maybe or recently. Look at it afresh. Splash some watter on the pages and watch the sprouts grow. Maybe get in touch with me so we can work together and get to where you want to go. I guarantee we’ll even have fun getting there..
Have a happy, breezy summer, with time to let your mind wander and question.
