Are you a hypnotist?
A New Year is upon us and with it the beginning of a period where ideas and higher vibrations take precedence over the brutal earthbound slog of the past few years. At least I like to think so. And I believe that a good film, that springs from an IDEA, can lift you right out of your present state of consciousness and transport you into another state of being. To external exotic places, yes, but even more powerful, to the far corners of your own guarded self. How easy it is, in a darkened theater, for your throat to expand and your eyes to fill with tears. Or, for your heart to pump, your reflexes negotiating every bend, as you watch Christian Bale’s character, in Ford vs Ferrari, drive to the finish line. Roland Barthes, once said that audiences go to the cinema to be hypnotized. He said other things about cinema that I don’t agree with, but I do believe, that to satisfy and please our audiences, we must hypnotize them.
And as a writer, I believe you need to be hypnotized yourself, before you can hypnotize your audience. Hypnotized by the material you are writing about. Hypnotized by your characters and their struggles and triumphs.
A lot to squirrel away in the back recesses of your mind while enjoying the warmth and togetherness, even if on ZOOM!…of the season. Truly thankful, as I am, that 2020 is coming to a close!
