Inspiration
All art has the remarkable ability to transport you to other times, other worlds and other realities, that you might not otherwise enter. One of those worlds is yourself.
The best kind of inspiration often come from fear, fear we’d rather not face. And yes, creeping round the corner is November! That means in a few days it’s Halloween and Halloween is a holiday that invites you to have fun with your fears. Your fear of creepy crawly creatures or of thunderstorms, or a knock at the door on a dark night. Someone I knew many years ago told me she was brought up in a Baptist community where children were forbidden to look up at the night sky for fear of meeting the Devil.
So I give you the image above. A photograph I took one night after leaving a late movie and which suggests a whole bunch of story ideas or scenes. I can think of at least three. So here’s the start of one that I came up with for a short animated film:
Two rats sitting by a half full garbage can. One says to the other, “Find anything?”
My treat, take it and run with it. Keep in mind you could also find inspiration in this image for something you are already writing, where you might need a shift of gears in the plot line.
Fool around and have fun…Happy Halloween!
