The Buzz
This time of the year always reminds us that like summer and winter, there’s the shorter spring and fall. Transitions. Like those subtle gear shifts in a story.
Speaking of seasons, indeed the Buzz has started. With Telluride, Venice and Toronto under our belts we’re already into the build to the Oscars. So far the buzz is about Pablo Larrain’s MARIA with Angelina Jolie, and a huge change of subject matter for Edward Berger, who made ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT with CONCLAVE, about selecting a new Pope. As well as from NEON, ANORA, about a sex worker and a Russian oligarch and which has so far among festival goers, received the most audience appreciation.
Well that’s enough to get you salivating.
Most importantly are the scripts and that we don’t have a read yet. A good film starts with a good script, to quote Al Pacino from a recent interview, “My friend Charlie [Laughton] told me, “Al, how you gonna go in there and be the don of all these guys, these great actors like [Robert] Duvall and all these people?” I said: “It’s in the script. I tell somebody, ‘You’re out.’ ‘You’re out!’.” Actors love screenwriters.
Two words, simple. “You’re out" yet you know that for the screenwriter, in this case Coppola and Mario Puzo who also wrote the novel, they considered those two words, sharpening their intent. Tuned into their craft.
A reminder to always rely on your craft, not just your inspiration.
